Block Captains for Patterson Park
Dear Neighbors:

The Safety Committee is currently seeking BLOCK CAPTAINS to assist with the flow of information between Patterson Park residents and the State and City agencies charged with keeping our community safe.  The newsletter and our monthly meetings provide regular opportunities for us to share information, and many PPNA members communicate actively over email.  Some of our neighbors are unable to attend meetings, however, and not all of us have access to email.  A network of Block Captains will close this gap in communication, and capitalize on the natural exchange of information that occurs by word of mouth every day.  If you are interested in stepping forward as a Block Captains, please email safety@pattersonparkneighbors.org

As a Block Captain, you will facilitate the flow of information between Patterson Park residents and the state and city agencies charged with keeping our community safe.

You will be asked to:
- Attend  training where you will meet other Block Captains and learn about the city and state agencies that are charged with keeping our community safe.

-Introduce yourself to your neighbors on your block, and collect information about the best way to reach your neighbors – email addresses, phone numbers, etc.

-Distribute information about city services, like 911 for emergency situations, 311 for non-emergency situations, and the city’s website.

-Serve as a conduit between the Neighborhood Association and your block – passing information to the Neighborhood Association about situations that occur on your block, and passing information to your neighbors about the outcome of those situations.

Although the time commitment will vary from block-to-block and week-to-week, we believe most Block Captains will need to commit four to six hours a month to this project.  The members of the Safety Committee will work with each Block Captain to ensure your time is not wasted – we understand you are busy, and we promise to honor any time you can give. As we look at neighborhoods to the south and west, we see real progress – and we know those communities didn’t make progress on the strength of the real estate market alone.  They flourish because the residents made a commitment to moving the community forward.  We can – and will – do the same in Patterson Park because of your investment in this program. If you are interested in serving as a Block Captain, please email the PPNA Vice President for your sector or any PPNA Board member with your name, block, and phone number, and someone from the Safety Committee will contact you soon.  If you do not have internet access, please call 410-276-5215 and leave a message with that information. Again, thank you for your interest in serving as a Block Captain.  Working together, we will make a difference for our community.

Safety Tips for Everyday

  • Never leave ANYTHING visible sitting in your car.
  • If you want to lock an item in your trunk, place it in your truck before you arrive at your destination, so that potential thieves do not see you put it there and then walk away from your car.
  • You can further minimize the chances of a vehicle break-in by not leaving your cigarette lighter outlet open, because an open outlet can be a signal that you have a cell phone or other electronic device in the car.
  • If you buy an X-Box, plasma TV or anything expensive, be discreet when you dispose of the box or carton that it came in.If you leave it sitting in the rear of your house on trash day, it's an invitation for a potential thief to target your home for a burglary.
